I’m planning to move to Manchester for postgraduate study and would like practical advice on areas that are student-friendly, well connected by public transport, reasonably safe, and not too expensive. I’m especially interested in first-hand local experience.

For students, Rusholme and Fallowfield are popular because of frequent buses, lots of student services and generally lower rents than the city centre. If your university is near Oxford Road, both are convenient. Withington is quieter and can be a good middle ground.
I’d add Hulme if you want to be close to the centre without paying city-centre prices. It’s convenient for several campuses and you can often walk or cycle instead of using transport every day.
Check the exact campus first. Manchester is compact, but your daily route matters more than the neighborhood name. I’d compare rent plus transport cost, not rent alone.
